  Things to See

Hotel Philip, Pylos

The Lagoon of Gialova is the southern most point of the Balkans, on which migratory birds, such as flamingos, herons and sea eagles (79 species of which are protected) rest, and which offers ideal conditions for hundreds of species to nest. The damp biotope is part of the European LIFE NATURE programme.

The 3km long Polylimnio ravine at Charavagi is 20km away from Pylos in the Kalamata direction. This heavenly spot of natural beauty offers waterfalls (up to 20m high) and lakes, such as the Kadi lake whose crystal clear running water contains small plants.

4000m below sea level, one of only three underwater neutrino telescopes in the world, with a diameter of 32m and a height of 320m, is being installed. Scientists from all over the world are conducting experiments to investigate neutrinos (uncharged high energy particles). These experiments are being conducted by the NESTOR institute for deep sea research, technology and neutrino astroparticle physics.

The Voidokilia is one of the bays which is an overflow of the Ionian Sea, and offers a wonderful half moon beach, with sand dunes and crystal clear water. Its history can be traced back to the myth of Hermes.

Divari, Chrysi Akti (West of Gialova) is a 5km long sand bank, which separates the lagoon from the beach and the bathers.
